Casa Amorim Girão

OUR HISTORY

HISTORY

It all started in 2010 with the organic farm, today a sustainable business, which makes the most of these lands’ fertility converting it into a varied supply of vegetables and fruits, while contributing to a healthy diet of a growing number of people. Years later, the owners started to restore Amorim Girão's parents' old house, making way for spacious, modern rooms bathed with natural light. The interesting original configuration of the entire complex gave way to a succession of rooms which goes from the wine cellar to bedrooms, while walking through common areas and enjoying the feeling of space, comfort and privacy. Wine used to be produced with grapes coming from other farms owned by the family in Fataunços. The architecture of the complex and the use of original materials such as granite and partition tell the story of a large family where Custódio Ribeiro Pereira de Amorim Girão and Luciana Augusta Lopes de Carvalho lived over 200 years ago; Parents of 13 children, they inhabited the whole complex that has now been recovered and named Casa Amorim Girão, an homage to the family, but especially to one of its descendants. Aristides Amorim Girão, uncle of the current owner of the House and a famous geographer, made his academic career at the University of Coimbra and was the author of important books such as the much cited “Human Geography” or “Draft of a regional map of Portugal”, a remarkable contribute to Portuguese Geography’s progress. In 1952, Aristides Amorim Girão, who had inherited the property together with one of his sisters, had another house built for his holidays, where one of his nephews and current owner lives with his family, running this beautiful project that opened its doors in August 2023.
